A high-profile delegation from Insan Charity of Kuwait paid a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor of the Islamic Call University College, Dr Abdallah Idris and discussed several issues of mutual importance. The recent visit took place a few months after a similar one last year.

The Insan Charity team, led by Eng Al-Waleed Al-Sharrad, as part of their programme, were taken to a guided tour of the university that covered the lecture rooms, library and computer laboratories. They also visited the site for the construction of a new two storied lecture room block.

The VC, Dr Abdallah Idris, in the company of the Deputy Mufti, His Eminence, Sheikh Muhammad Waiswa, dropped in on the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council’s Old Kampala Hospital that is earmarked for the establishment of the ICUC Medical School. The Old Kampala Hospital shall be the teaching hospital for the yet to be established medical school and faculty of health sciences. The team also visited the Old Kampala Primary School whose facilities shall be transformed into lecture rooms for the Islamic Call University College.

It must be recalled that Insan Charity of Kuwait signed a comprehensive MoU with the UMSC, among others, to provide the necessary support to the Islamic Call University College, develop its capacities and lead the university’s expansion programme into the field of science and technology. During the visit, Sheikh Eng Al-Waleed Al-Sharrad pronounced his donation of a two-storied-eight lecture room block to the Islamic Call University College.

At the invitation of the Coordinator General of COMSTECH – Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation), the Islamic Call University College participated in a weeklong annual academic adventure that commenced with a 2-day COMSTECH’s Consortium of Excellence (CCoE) Meeting that attracted 17 leading universities and institutions of higher learning in the OIC member countries. The COMSTECH’s Consortium of Excellence, is a body that brings together universities in the OIC member countries.

The 28 member delegates from mainly Asia and Africa also attended the 5th Rectors’ Conference organised by the Association of Private Sector Universities in Pakistan, at the Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission auditorium, which culminated into the launch of Superior University’s Framework for Character Mastery. The launch was officiated by the former Governor of the Punjab Province, Muhammad Baigh-ur-Rehman.

As a strategy for exchanging experiences and knowledge, COMSTECH pre-arranged the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding with leading universities and scientific organisations in Pakistan. These included the Government College University – Faisalabad, Punjab University, and Gourmet Foods in Lahore. Other universities that were not scheduled have shared their draft MoUs that shall be signed virtually.

Besides the above initiatives, the delegates engaged with many other universities for mutual collaborations extending to student and staff exchange, joint research publication, seminars, workshops and conferences. The onus is on the university to operationalise the MoU for the mutual benefit of the institutions. ICUC was represented by Dr Adnan Ali Adikata, the Head, International Relations.

In a significant step towards fostering educational opportunities and community support, the Islamic Call University College (ICUC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Education Department of Tejwal Travel and Tourism. The partnership aims to extend vital educational and related services to the Sudanese community and refugees residing in Uganda.

The signing ceremony, held at the ICUC campus at Old Kampala Hill, Kampala District, was attended by top officials from both institutions. The Vice-Chancellor of ICUC, Dr Abdallah Idris expressed gratitude for the collaboration, emphasising the university’s mission of organising and advancing education for underserved communities.

“Our partnership with Tejwal Travel and Tourism is rooted in shared values of compassion and empowerment,” the Vice-Chancellor stated. “This MoU will enable us to make a tangible difference in the lives of the Sudanese community and refugee populations in Uganda, offering them access to quality education and other essential services.”

Representing Tejwal Travel and Tourism, the Head of Education Department, Dr Tahir, highlighted the organisation’s commitment to bridging gaps in education and providing tailored services to marginalised groups. “Education is a tool for transformation. By working with ICUC, we aim to ensure that no member of the Sudanese or refugee community is left behind,” he remarked.

Key Features of the MoU:

  1. ICUC will provide scholarships and flexible learning opportunities to deserving students from the Sudanese community and refugees.
  2. Both institutions will collaborate on training programs designed to equip individuals with skills for sustainable livelihoods.
  3. Initiatives to promote cross-cultural understanding and inclusivity will be jointly implemented.
  4. The partnership includes services beyond education, such as career counselling and mentorship for refugees adapting to new environments.

The MoU also marks the beginning of a series of programs and outreach activities targeting communities in Kampala and other regions with significant Sudanese and refugee populations.

Both parties affirmed their commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the agreed initiatives. The ceremony concluded with a sense of optimism and shared determination to create lasting positive change for the Sudanese and refugee communities in Uganda.

A two-member delegation from the Amoud Foundation’s East Africa offices recently paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor of ICUC. The delegation included representatives from the Amoud Somali Office and Amoud Kenya Office, reflecting the foundation’s commitment to fostering regional collaborations.

The delegation, led by esteemed Sheikh Ibrahim Muhammad Ahmad, shared insights into their ongoing efforts to address educational challenges within East African communities. The Vice Chancellor of the Islamic Call University College (ICUC) Dr Abdallah Idris recently held a meeting with a delegation from the Somali community in Uganda to explore potential areas of collaboration. The three-member team, led by Sheikh Ibrahim Muhammad Ahmad, outlined their efforts to bridge the education gap within the Somali community through a holistic approach to education.

During the meeting, the delegation presented their work in conducting halaqa [circular] lessons that encompass Islamic studies, hadeeth, the Arabic language, Sharia, and Arabic literature. These lessons are part of an initiative to enhance educational opportunities and preserve cultural heritage for the Somali community. The Islamic Call University College (ICUC) held its maiden annual end-of-year staff party on December 19th, 2024, at the scenic Buloba Forest Park. This much-anticipated event brought together academic and administrative staff to celebrate the year’s accomplishments and foster camaraderie in a relaxed, natural setting.

The day began with an opening prayer, followed by remarks from the Vice Chancellor, Dr Abdallah Idris, who commended the team for their resilience and dedication despite the year’s challenges. Activities included team-building games, a nature walk through the forest, and an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding staff members for their contributions.

The innovation and excellence award went to the Director of the School of Postgraduate and Research, Assoc Prof Dr Fawz Mulumba, the best faculty award was taken by the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language, and the most committed staff award was extended to Ms Kasfa Namiro. Ms Aisha Nakazibwe took home the young staff award while the longest serving staff award was extended to the Academic Registrar, Mr Saleh Ahmed Suwed.
